Alex is a Bay Area native where he began his architectural career after graduating from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and a one-year Rotary scholarship studying in Denmark. His international experience additionally includes three years working in a studio in Milan, Italy where he designed a wide variety of projects in Milan, Tuscany and Sardinia. These experiences greatly influenced his architectural sensibility and continued worldly travels augment and enrich his design vocabulary.
Upon his return from Italy, Alex established Studio Bergtraun, Architects in 1988. Alex and his wife Michelle thoroughly enjoy the Bay Area cultural life and natural wonders while trying to stay ahead of their two sons.
Raised in the Detroit area Stuart received his BS degree in Architecture at the University of Michigan in 1991. After attending the Technical University in Vienna, Austria, Stuart joined Studio Libeskind's Berlin office. Upon returning to the U.S. he worked in a few Los Angeles studios gaining experience in urban design and custom residential design while pursuing his MA degree at UCLA.
Stuart joined Studio Bergtraun in 2003 where he is an integral part of the Studio design team as a senior project architect. He also enjoys collaborating on projects with his wife Eliza. Stuart is most interested in the creative problem solving aspect of the profession and creating a concise set of drawings.
